Online Counselling with a neurodivergent therapist

Welcome

Hello there, my name is Debbie Dawson and welcome to Unboxed Counselling. I am a qualified integrative counsellor which means that I incorporate a blend of approaches to offer you an empathic space to explore a range of issues without judgement.

I found out that I am autistic later in life and I have learned a lot about myself in doing so.  I have a particular interest in working with neurodivergent clients but I am trained to work with anyone over the age of 16 and I treat everyone as an individual.

If you've ever felt put in a box or expected to act, think or behave a certain way, you might have felt restricted by that. Or perhaps you have a lot of emotions or thoughts that you would like to explore. This is why I have named my practice Unboxed Counselling.

How Does it Work?

Unboxed Explained

Counselling offers the opportunity for you to talk about any issues that may be troubling you and to gain a better understanding of yourself.  It can be a dauting process and it can involve a fair amount of emotional upheaval. However, despite the trials, it can be a very liberating and hopefully healing experience.

Although counselling is a talking therapy, I may on occasions work creatively with you, if appropriate and if you are willing. This may involve drawing or writing or other creative methods but this is certainly not mandatory! Sometimes the act of doing something can give us more clues as to how we feel about something than merely searching for words.

Our work between us is confidential although I will anonymously discuss elements of our sessions with  my qualified clinical supervisor who ensures that I am working ethically.  I am registered with the ICO and take your privacy seriously. I am also a registered member of the BACP which means I adhere to their ethical framework.  I am also a student member of the BPS.

I am trained to work with clients with common mental health problems such as anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, loss and coping with change. This is not an exhaustive list and I have first hand experience of motherhood, living with chronic pain and adjusting to life through a neurodivergent lens.

My qualifications include a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. I am also currently studying for a Masters in Applied Psychology.

I regularly undertake relevant CPD courses.

Why Choose Unboxed?

Neurodivergent Affirming Practice

I have lived and clinical experience of neurodivergence and understand some of the unique challenges and strengths that this brings. Ultimately though, I am neurodiversity affirming - all types of minds are valid and welcome.

Accessible Online Sessions

Some clients feel more comfortable in their own home and some may be unable to travel. You could be in the office, in a parked car or on your lunch break.  As long as you are in a confidential safe space during the session, therapy can take place anywhere.

Talking Therapy with a Twist

As an integrative counsellor, I draw on a variety of approaches including person-centred and psychodynamic. I take the whole person into consideration depending on your needs and wishes. If you are open to trying something a little more creative and have some paints, pens or glue to hand then we can explore this! Please note, I am not a qualified art therapist but I have experience of working creatively with talking therapy clients.
